Quilt As You Go

Wenonah’s T-Shirt Quilt

June 8, 2021 by Marguerita

Wenonah’s dad loves his Harleys! He’d collected T-Shirts from many places and Wenonah put them together into this quilt, which he uses and loves. She also helped me tremendously when I was writing my T-Shirt Quilts book, by arranging a quilting retreat with friends and they all tested stabilizers!

Below are a couple of close-ups of the T-shirts. Wenonah lived in Alaska at the time the book was written but has since moved to Ohio to be closer to her parents.

Wenonah was one of the first quilters to share a photo of her “Crazy Shortcut Quilt” when we first released that book (2007) and I was astonished to find out that we both lived in Alaska. Over the years we’ve met up, gone to retreats (she’s the organizer), swapped photos and emails and had a lot of quilting fun. She has the best friends and I am grateful to be counted among them. ~Marguerita

Susan H’s Crazy Shortcake Quilt Story

June 6, 2021 by Marguerita

Hi Marguerita,

I reached out to you in 2019 with a question about the crazy shortcake quilt I was starting to make for my mother’s birthday.  You quickly responded and were very encouraging and supportive.  It meant a lot.

Unfortunately, my mother passed away a few months before her 97th birthday and I put the quilt away without finishing it.  However, as I recently had my machine out to work on covid masks, I decided to pull out the quilt and try to finish it.  I thought you might like to see the end product.  Thanks to you, I successfully made my very first quilt!

Stay safe!
Susan H

If you have an alphabet on your machine, it’s a great way to sign and date your quilts.
You can really see the decorative stitches on the light fabric backing!

Mary Z’s T-Shirt Quilt

June 4, 2021 by Marguerita

Thank you for your book! I just finished my quilt… not perfect, but good enough. I used fleece fabric for backing/stuffing.  Makes it a light-weight throw. I’m including a pix. Thanks again – your book took me through step-by-step.
Mary

I love how Mary up-sized the various t-shirts to make them all the same size, with multiple borders if needed, which brings a lovely mix of colors to her quilt. ~Marguerita

Janet V’s T-Shirt Quilt

June 1, 2021 by Marguerita

This is not the first time Janet V. has sent me a photo of a T-Shirt quilt! Here’s her note:

Here is the front of my first quilt used with starched t-shirts! These were shirts we bought when we were traveling in the rv!!!

I finally found liquid starch at Walmart! Couldn’t find starch except the spray ones! I really liked the starched t-shirts! They were so much easier to use!

Cheryl’s Table Topper

Cheryl’s Crazy Shortcut 4-Block project from my class in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, 2019

Look at those decorative stitches! We always have fun in class learning to use those gorgeous stitches and pretty threads to do the quilting on our “crazy cut” blocks. Thank you Cheryl for sending a photo to share with everyone!

Dawn’s T-Shirt Quilt

May 28, 2021 by Marguerita

Just a note to thank you so much for your recent book!

I have just finished my first T-shirt quilt using your book as my guide.  Your concise instructions and helpful hints made this a very enjoyable project.  I used flannel for the backing so it was heavy at the end to work with – but things worked out!

Thank you once again!
Dawn R

Simply Charming Quilt From Janice

May 19, 2018 by Marguerita

I just received the pic below from Janice, and then I went digging for any emails we have shared. They go back to 2012! We started talking about the batting requirements in the Kindle version of our first book Crazy Shortcut Quilts. Then we moved onto how we each make homemade starch, and then the sizing for Simply Charming from our book Quilt As You Go {reimagined}. Janice wanted to make the quilt in a queen size and wanted help with the fabric calculations. Here’s her quilt, isn’t it gorgeous!

Beautiful Maple Leaf Quilt

May 20, 2017 by Marguerita

Bonnie Jenkins has sent me photos before of her quilts and here’s her newest and its story:

My husband and I visited the east coast of Canada last September, just in time to see the beautiful autumn leaves. I really loved the colours of the maple leaves. When we returned home I bought a copy of your book ‘Finish (almost) any quilt’ and was inspired to make a maple leaf quilt using your method. I found a maple leaf block on line and made the blocks but I didn’t put them on point as in your book.

I am so happy that it turned out so well and that I was able to complete it by myself. It is a gift for my brother Bill and his wife Dianne. Thank you so much for your help and the great tutorials on YouTube

Janet’s T-Shirt Quilt

April 16, 2017 by Marguerita

I received the nicest email from Janet about her t-shirt quilt:

I was re-reading your T-shirt Quilt as you go book and decided I should send you my first t-shirt quilt. I retired in March 2016 and promised my boss I would make her a t-Shirt quilt. Well I started it in October 2015 and finished it sometime in November! And gave it to Dr. Freeman at the Christmas party. I really enjoyed quilting the squares and then figuring out how to sew them all together was very well explained. I learned a lot on that first t-shirt quilt. First I will never mushy Batty! And the Stabilizer I got I don’t think I will ever get again. The hardest part of this was getting those squares to not be a mess after quilting. I had to redo each one after quilting. Getting those squares to smooth out was really hard. I was really happy with that I almost had everyone about the same size. My husband helped me with the sewing machine as I have not used a sewing machine for quilting – always did it by hand. He really tried to make sure I learned how to use this sewing machine which he purchased years ago to make stuff for his sailboat.

Everything you put in this book was so great. I did have to re-read things over and over but once I had done it once or twice, I could do it for all of the squares. I did a bad thing and that was I decided to not wash everything except the t-shirts. I told my boss to not wash the quilt. We shall see if she does. She said she would wash in cold water!! My fault. I just did not wash the material. I will do that for the next one which I will start making either in March or November. I do lots of RV trips in the RV and not sure I will take the squares with me to quilt. We shall see.

Just wanted to thank you for writing this book.

Janet L. Vincent

Thank you Janet! In my world a finished quilt is a beautiful quilt and I’m sure the Dr. loves and cherishes it!
