Crazy Shortcake

April 6, 2008 by Marguerita

Yesterday evening I cut, pressed, layered and pinned my quilt squares. (about 2½ hours)

This afternoon I added the decorative stitching (also about 2½ hours). I’m going to take a short break and then cut sashing strips.

I’m calling it Crazy Shortcake (so far) because I am using our Crazy Shortcut method on the Moda Layer Cake fabrics – Crazy Short-Cake 🙂

Time to make a QUILT!

April 5, 2008 by Marguerita

I am cutting fabric for a new quilt! Yayyyyyyy! I’ve been up to my eyeballs in html, webs, blogs, rings and mud (cleaning up electrons and rabbit ranges). Now, it’s Fabric Time. (say that like the commercial would say “Miller Time” – -lol)

The Fat Quarter Shop (I am still not sure if this is a good thing or a dangerous thing) had my fabric order to me about 20 seconds after I clicked “Buy Now”. Hehehehe

That Moda Layer Cake stack of fabrics has been sighing to me all week – “come quilt me” it whispers…”forget that computer stuff, come play with faaaaabbriiic”.

So, the ring is fixed, the word is out, the web is updated, the bunnies are taken care of and now it’s time to play. I know exactly what I want to do with this quilt – it’s partly tried and true with partly testing out a few new ideas too. My favorite!

Oh, and I know who’s going to get it too!! I just love that part, thinking about who I am going to give it to while I am making it. It makes me happy.

Quilt Contest!

March 20, 2008 by Marguerita

I just love the Jolly Jabber Blog by the Fat Quarter Shop. They are running a contest right now, using a Moda fabric called ‘Simplicity’. Very pretty (for a floral). Hehehehe. Although florals aren’t my favorite type of fabric, I really like this line and the contest pushed me over the edge on buying some. I have a new idea that I want to try and this will suit it perfectly.

Here’s info on the contest (click here to go to the Jolly Jabber Blog about the contest) and I have received notice that it has been extended until April 6. My challenge shall be to make a small quilt in a day, from start to binding, although I will admit that I bought the Layer Cake, so my first cut is already made. If they send the fabric completely flat then I won’t have to press it, saving another half hour or so. I will keep you posted!

Audrey’s Hat

March 12, 2008 by Marguerita

I’ve been working on a secret project….Audrey’s Hat. As you can see from Sarah’s blog, Audrey loves to put things on her head. Her favorite thing is a tupperware toy that she pretends is her hat. That made me think that maybe I should make her a hat.

This hat had no design or pattern in mind, just play and relief for me after refurbishing kitchen floors everyday. So each day for the past 4 days, I’ve cut a little, sewn, agonized over fabrics, tossed my stash around and played. I didn’t take photos of the process because I didn’t think it would work, but I believe that I have a really cute hat here, and I can’t wait to give it to Audrey.

It was hard to make it without her here, to test for size. I used the bear, but he’s just not the same as a baby girl – lol 🙂

So, this weekend I shall see Audrey and give her my gift to her, her very own hat. It’s a secret though, so if you see her, don’t tell!

I am going to make another one and I’ll take photos as I go on that one.

Sarah Raffuse Blogs!

March 4, 2008 by Marguerita

My daughter and co-author, Sarah Raffuse, has started a blog. Hehehehehe. I knew that if I stole her pictures enough she’d start blogging herself 🙂 <—-happy mom smile!

On her post today she shows off one of her most favorite quilts, made with the Bella Nonna pattern and silk flowers (check out their stuff here). Their patterns are cute, cute, cute! And they are nice people, we always say hi & chat at Quilt Market.

So stop on by Sarah Raffuse’s Blog and say hi or just take a peek!

What Sarah’s working on

February 27, 2008 by Marguerita

Here’s a peek at a square that Sarah’s working on. She doesn’t know I’m posting it 🙂 She said she’s going to start her own blog…. If I keep stealing her photos she just might do it!

What do you think of the cutting design? The colors of the fabrics are off just a little, I need to get her some daylight bulbs for photography.

Do you think she should call her blog ‘Sarah Raffuse’ or come up with something else?

Fabric Bracelet

February 23, 2008 by Marguerita

This is soooo cute! I want to go make 25 of them right now! Take a look at this quick, well written tutorial for making a fabric bracelet (or 5) and while you’re taking it all in, think about making them with a touch of batting, just like the Crazy Shortcut Quilts, or better yet, using up some of the ‘cut off scraps’ to make them.

This project was the suggestion of a friend (is she really, or should I be mad at her for getting me interested in these?!?!?) Diane Knott, artist and friend, is getting the blame for this new interest.

Update: here’s another one, and it’s really unique and pretty!

Purple Quilt

February 21, 2008 by Marguerita

I am not very good at naming quilts, and this is going to belong to someone else anyway**, so I’ve been calling these my purple squares and now they are the ‘purple quilt’. I finished it up last night and am shipping it out today, to be in the quilt auction for Catholic Social Services Fiber and Art Auction, March 1, 2008 in Anchorage, Alaska.

**I stun people by telling them that I don’t own any quilts – everything I’ve made, from my first quilt to my last, has been given away. I don’t sleep under one, don’t have one on the sofa or in the car and don’t have any hoarded in any closets either. I know, I’m unusual. I make quilts and I give them away. It makes me happy 🙂

Color

February 15, 2008 by Marguerita

Quilts are all about texture and color, but so are a lot of other things. I read webs and blogs daily and today Seth Godin posted a link to a web designer who has put up a page of suggested color groupings. These are color themes that the company suggests for web sites but as I looked at them I thought “what great color combinations for quilts!” Take a look.

Dexigner.com shows off “fall women’s colors” according to Pantone. Here’s a link to the Pantone site and you can view Pantone’s 33 pg pdf of the colors there.

Fabric Postcard from a Friend

February 1, 2008 by Marguerita

I did a small favor for the list-owner of Stashbusters on Yahoo! and look what she sent me!!! A fabric postcard! It is sooooooo cool 🙂 I have a stash of Peltex and Timtex and I just might have to try making a few of these. My bin of tiny scraps would be perfect for making small snippet style postcards. I just can’t wait to try it myself! TYVM to Sandra Wucher for the card and the inspiration!
