Sashing Your Squares

June 23, 2009 by Marguerita

Hi Quilters! I get a few emails every now and then about the sashing on our quilt as you go style of quiltmaking, and I re-read the book (thanks to my friend Phyllis at Patchwork Plus in Virginia!) and I want to clarify something for all of you experienced quilters!

We use a “true” 1/4″ seam or even a FAT quarter inch seam when sewing on our sashing strips! Here’s a short video I made about it, with a little teaser at the end 🙂

Now, the reason I said “experienced quilters” is because of the precise piecing requirement of a scant 1/4″ seam that much of traditional quilt piecing uses. Beginners don’t know about this and they never have a problem, but experienced quilters will often use a scant 1/4″ seam out of habit, and then they are disappointed with how the sashing finishes up.

Of course, being experienced quilters, they quickly realize that a fast pass, with a wider seam, fixes everything and they keep quilting right along! Many, many thanks to Phyllis at Patchwork Plus for helping me see that this could be explained better! 🙂

That was a great clarification! I always use a true 1/4″ so didn’t have the problem,,,but I see where it could be one! Great video~again!

I just want to say a very big thank you for your dedication as a teacher on video through youtube and your website. I am just starting to quilt but I have a 30 years’ experience with sewing. I love your approach to quilting since you make it seems to be so easy, yet pretty, economical in time and energy to make but still very warming and comfy.

I am having trouble visualizing the way the finished back side of the quilt will look. This video helped a lot, however would it be possible for you to do a short video with a sample of the final sashing and maybe use black thread on white fabric?

I am excited to begin my first project but since I am a visual learner sometimes reading a book doesn’t help as much as I’d like it to…..thanks…czg

I can’t few your video on this site. I am confused about how you turn the sashing and sew it. Are you sewing stitch in the ditch or decorative or does it matter?

Your videos are awesome and you are such a great teacher.

    Thank you!
